NEW HAVEN, Connecticut — On Wednesday morning, two police officers in Connecticut were injured and a suspect was killed during a shootout while police were trying to carry out a search request at an apartment building in New Haven.
New Haven police said the two West Haven cops are expected to recover from their injuries and are receiving treatment at a hospital. Authorities said that three other people in the room, including an 8-year-old girl, were not hurt.
TV news showed an apartment building with broken windows that was blocked off with yellow police tape.
New Haven Police Chief Karl Jacobson said that around 5:30 a.m., officers from a regional task team were trying to carry out a search warrant when the suspect began shooting.
“It turned into a standoff,” Jacobson said at a morning news briefing. “After a while, the suspect wasn’t responding to the officers who were trying to talk to him. It was later found out that during a shootout, the suspect was hit and died.”
Jacobson stated that the cops at the scene couldn’t help one of their injured colleagues right away because the suspect was shooting at them.
The police did not quickly share the suspect’s name or information about the search order.
The police in New Haven announced that the state inspector general’s office will look into the killing.
