Rear View Mirror – My Week in Review

This week, there is nothing that earth-shattering going on over at Waldina or Wasp & Pear, so I am giving a couple shout outs to other blogs that I consistently enjoy:

Beguiling Hollywood never fails to catch my interest.  Her posts about historic California and Hollywood are so beautiful, I always feel transported.  I especially stuck on one right now about the Hollywood Bowl, I cannot stop looking at the photos.  You should add this blog to your reader.

I have said it before and I will say it again, I am endlessly fascinated with Tumblr.  I love all the creative work happening over there.  If you have a Tumblr, consider following a few of these:

Nice Day For A Revolution is mostly a lot of great photography from around the world of people expressing themselves and trying to make the world a better place.  That is my take, some call it anarchy.

Humans of New York provides photos and quotes that the photographer/author has collected.  It truly make the ordinary extraordinary in the most incredible city in the world.

Lensblr is a community of original photographers sharing their amazing work on Tumblr, it vastly varies from artist to artist and will change your perspective on the world in an instant.

Originally, for this week in review, I was going to provide a very in-depth tutorial of morning/evening routines.    I still will, but I thought adding a couple alternative-reading options may be nice.  It sounds exceptionally uninteresting, and it very well may be to most, but I have extensively researched and carefully chosen the products I use.  Here I explain why and include links to where they are available.

Morning Cleanse:  I wash my in the morning with Paula’s Choice Resist Optimal Result Hydrating Cleanser mixed with Jack Black Face Buff Energizing Scrub with Vitamin C & Menthol in the morning to cleanse and get my beard/face ready for shaving.

Shave:  I shave with razors I ordered from  When you buy the reasonably-priced, precision-crafted razors and their gorgeously-crafted handles, they donate a shave or the dollar-equivalent to The Mission Continues, an organization that empowers veterans of recent wars to apply the skills they learned in the military here at home through six-month fellowships with a non-profit organization. Through the fellowship program, they renew their own sense of purpose and better the lives of those around them. Fellowships often lead to full-time employment, pursuit of higher education, or a permanent role of service.  I usually use Every Man Jack Shave Cream or the shave cream that comes with my order of Harry’s razors.  Kiehl’s also makes several good shave creams, but the ones that I use work the same and are cheaper.  They are both simple fragrance-free creams that get the job done.

Body Cleanse:  I use Pre de Provence French Bar Soap that I get at Pharmaca and a nylon scrub cloth to clean and exfoliate in the morning and at night.  I am a big fan of the Lime Zest, Lemongrass and Verbena scents, they are so clean and invigorating.

here’s where it gets ridiculous

Tone/Moisturize/Protect:  After shaving, I use Paula’s Choice Resist Advanced Replenishing Toner followed by either Paula’s Choice RESIST Daily Smoothing Treatment with 5% AHA or Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Gel Exfoliant.  I moisturize with Paula’s Choice RESIST Anti-Aging Clear Skin Hydrator and top the whole thing off with Paula’s Choice Skin Balancing Ultra-Sheer Daily Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 30.  If I am planning on being outside for any length of time or it is the weekend, I will add some Paula’s Choice Extra Care Non-Greasy Sunscreen SPF 50 to the areas that I think will need more protection.  I hate how most sunblocks feel and smell, but have found this one to be the best so far.  To be truly effective, SPF needs to be reapplied ever 90 or so minutes, so I bring some with me just in case.

Hair:  I shampoo with a bluing shampoo because my hair is graying and I like it to look silver.  I do not use conditioner because my scalp does not need it and my hair is very short.  I style it with Kiehl’s Creative Cream Wax.  It is super dry, not shiny at all, and can easily be reactivated in a second by running your wet hands through your hair.  We all have our favorite Kiehl’s product, this one is mine.

Body:  I use Gold Bond Shea Butter body lotion unless I plan on being outside for any length of time, then I use a broad-spectrum SPF.

Fragrance:  For years, I have been wearing Frederic Malle’s Vetiver Extraordinaire from Barneys New York.  Top notes are bergamot and bitter orange; middle notes are pink pepper, cloves and vetiver; base notes are sandalwood, cedar, oakmoss, myrhh and musk.  It is clean, crisp, woodsy, and completely me.

then i get dressed

Night Cleanse/Tone/Hydrate/Repair:  In the post-gym evening, I wash my face during my shower using Paula’s Choice RESIST Optimal Results Hydrating Cleanser with a Clarisonic Mia Sonic Skin Cleansing System that my mother bought me.  It leaves my face feeling beyond clean.  A couple times a week, I will use Paula’s Choice RESIST Weekly Resurfacing Treatment with 10% AHA to burn off a couple layers of old skin.  Every night, I use Paula’s Choice RESIST Intensive Wrinkle-Repair Retinol Serum  and a couple dabs of Paula’s Choice RESIST Triple-Action Dark Spot Eraser 7% AHA Lotion to give my face a boost while I sleep.

Night Body:  After the shower, I moisturize my body with Neutrogena Light Sesame Body Oil.  It absorbs quickly and smells fresh and clean.

That is all, and to be honest, it takes a lot more time to write it than it takes to actually do it.  I get up at 6:45 am every weekday, jump in the shower, do all that stuff, and am dressed, drinking a cup of coffee and watching the news by 7:20 am.  The key with everything is consistency, be it fitness or skin protection, just make it a habit and get used to doing it until you do not even realize that it is happening.  I do not believe that any of these products are miracle workers, but I do believe that regular use of them will help improve your skin texture and slow down the signs of aging.

  1. I certainly will say something – you are darling! And, my favorite Kiehl’s product is something seaweed infused that’s supposed to “firm” the jaw line, aka, anti-wrinkle cream 😉

      1. Never underestimate the power of a large coop of coffee. I’m not even sure why they still make normal size coffee cups.
