I have a difficult relationship with Zelda. She was a drunk (I’m only allowed to say that because I am as well) and mentally unstable (yes), though certainly not deserving of the treatment she deserved. And how many people remember how she died? Horrific.
But was she a great to be obsessed over? Never given a chance given her environment. Her novel is quite good. Better than some of her husband’s short stories. She possessed discipline – that’s what breaks my heart. Her hours of dance practice I see as both bottomless potential and a flight from the life she was living.
We romanticize her to some extent, glossing over character flaws that don’t fit our perceived personae. My heart breaks over her life story. “Show me a hero and I’ll write you a tragedy. “
