I saw several films this year, it turns out that a lot of films I watched were actually not released in 2019, which shortens the list quickly. I am fairly certain that my favorite film released in 2019 that I have seen is Once Upon A Time In… Hollywood. I am a Tarantino fan, but not for the sake of Tarantino, but because he makes creative, beautiful films with deliciously disturbing choices, and brings the viewer along for the ride. He combines Hollywood nostalgia with familiar true crime characters, a gorgeous soundtrack, marvelous acting by marvelous actors, stylish decor, fantastic cinematography, and the end product is a Hollywood love letter fairy tail set in the last summer of the 1960s.
‘Once Upon A Time In… Hollywood’
Once Upon A Time In… Hollywood is writer-director Quentin Tarantino’s ninth film. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a fading western actor named Rick Dalton and Brad Pitt as his loyal stuntman Cliff Booth. It’s set in the changing Hollywood of 1969, and in many ways, it’s a breezy romp through studio backlots and makeup trailers — but hanging over every frame is the threat of violence, in the form of a very real historical tragedy — the brutal Manson family murders in the Hollywood Hills. It’s glossy L.A. nostalgia laced with grisly violence — it’s peak Tarantino, but does it work?
