Targeting the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua (TdA) in Colorado, federal investigators arrested around 50 illegal immigrants early Sunday morning.
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Rocky Mountain Field Division carried out the operation with assistance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Denver offices.
The multi-agency task force concentrated on members of TDA, a gang associated with violent criminal activity and drug distribution in multiple U.S. states, as well as drug trafficking networks.
Authorities characterized the early-morning raid in Adams County, Colorado, by federal officers as a “makeshift nightclub.”
Apparently “invite-only,” the venue was thought to be a gathering place for people with ties to the TDA gang. The DEA claims that many people connected to the gang were on the scene when the operation was conducted.
The agency posted images on social media showing dozens of undocumented immigrants waiting to be transported, many of them handcuffed and sitting in the snow.
The DEA posted a video of a bus that was utilized to take the almost 50 people who were arrested away from the scene in a another post.
Most of those arrested were reportedly linked to the Venezuelan-based Tren de Aragua gang, which has extended its criminal activities into other areas, including the United States.
Some information regarding the detainees was left unclear, though, as the DEA did not provide a precise breakdown of those arrested.
The action is a component of a broader plan to break up the criminal organizations associated with TDA, which is notorious for drug trafficking, people smuggling, and other illegal operations.
This operation is part of the Trump administration’s larger effort to crack down on illegal immigration, with a focus on criminal elements in immigrant communities.
