The man from Altadena who won the biggest Powerball jackpot ever used some of his money to buy homes in nice Los Angeles County neighborhoods. Unfortunately, the wildfires have destroyed at least one of those houses.
Edwin Castro won the $2-billion Powerball jackpot in 2023. After taxes, he got about $1 billion, which he used to buy homes in Malibu, Altadena, and the Hollywood Hills, according to property records looked at by The Times.
According to satellite images from Airbus that were looked at by The Times, by the night of January 8, two of the homes were in evacuation zones and the third had already burned down.
The home, a two-bedroom house with ocean views bought for $3.85 million in September 2023, was one of thousands that were destroyed by the Palisades fire on January 7.
When the Sunset fire started near Runyon Canyon, Castro’s huge $25.5-million home in the Hollywood hills was right in its evacuation zone.
According to a visual analysis by the Times, the Eaton fire came close to his $3.98 million home in Altadena but missed it. It also missed the gas station in Altadena where he got the winning ticket.
But the Malibu house on PCH near Big Rock was destroyed, along with all of its nearby homes.
Castro bought the house with an LLC whose public records showed that its business managers were the same two men who were named as managers of the LLCs that Castro used to buy the other two homes.
