Californians who lost their homes in wildfires can get $770 from FEMA  Here’s how to apply

President Joe Biden announced Tuesday that people who have been affected by wildfires in California can get a one-time payment of $770 to “quickly purchase” things they might need.

The government help, which comes from a program run by the government Emergency Management Agency, is meant to cover the cost of things like water, formula, gas, and prescription drugs.

There are several FEMA programs in place to help Californians right now, including the Serious Needs Assistance Program. These programs are meant to help as organized wildfire response efforts continue. A representative for FEMA told USA TODAY on Tuesday that people who have been affected by the wildfires may be able to get help from more than one program.

“Just to be clear, we’re not going to wait until the fires are out to start helping the people who were hurt.” “You all know that we’re getting them help right now,” Biden said. “So far, nearly 6,000 survivors have registered to do just that and $5.1 million has gone out.”

Every day, hundreds of prisoners are among the thousands of firefighters working around the clock to put out the deadly fires that have killed at least 24 people and destroyed neighborhoods across Los Angeles County.

How to ask for help from FEMA

A news release issued Sunday said that if your house was damaged by the fires, FEMA may be able to help pay for some costs, such as the purchase of necessary items, temporary housing, replacement of personal items, or basic repairs.

But FEMA’s help was meant to help people who don’t have insurance or whose insurance doesn’t cover basic needs. People who have insurance should make a claim as soon as possible and be ready to give FEMA information about their coverage plan when they ask for help.

You can call the FEMA Helpline at 1-800-621-3362 or use the FEMA app to ask for help from FEMA. People who speak Spanish can use this page to ask for FEMA help.
