Gun went off by accident while police officers were training at the Kent County Courthouse

A gun went off by accident during a training lesson for police officers at the Kent County Courthouse on Tuesday. This is the third time in three months that something like this has happened.

A statement from the Delaware Department of Homeland Security said the discharge happened at the Dover building around 2:30 p.m. while the constables were training for their jobs with the Justice of the Peace Court. It didn’t hurt anyone.

The statement said that the Department of Justice was told about the event and that the Delaware Capitol Police are looking into it with help from the Dover Police Department.

The Delaware Courts website says that JP Court constables do legal work like serving subpoenas and summonses and evicting people. They can also arrest people who break the law with or without a warrant. According to the Delaware Code, they have to get gun training every year.

A Delaware police officer fired a gun by mistake on December 10 in the Milford School District. The same thing happened on November 7 at Stanton Middle School.
