On Wednesday, a Southwest Airlines pilot was stopped at an airport in Georgia and charged with DUI.
A Transportation Security Administration officer thought the pilot smelled like alcohol and told police. The pilot was then arrested at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, according to a person familiar with the case who spoke to NBC News.
“We know about a problem with an employee on Flight 3772 this morning from Savannah. The company said in a statement, “The Employee has been taken off duty.”
We care more about the safety of our workers and customers than anything else.
It took five hours longer than planned for the flight to Chicago, records show.
The airline said they were sorry for the trouble and that customers were able to get on other planes.
A statement from the Federal Aviation Administration said that pilots are not allowed to drink alcohol while on duty or to fly or try to fly an airplane within eight hours of drinking alcohol or if their blood alcohol percentage (BAC) is 0.04% or higher.
Records from the Chatham County sheriff’s office show that David Allsop, 52, was stopped by airport police for driving while drunk. Sheriff’s records show that he was being held on a $3,500 bail.
It wasn’t clear right away Wednesday night if Allsop had a lawyer. His family could not be reached for comment.
