Transitional Sheltering Assistance from FEMA for storm survivors will last until May 2025

FEMA has decided to continue the Transitional Sheltering Assistance (TSA) program for another two months, until May 26, 2025. This will happen in North Carolina.

A news release says that Governor Josh Stein asked Deanne Criswell, who runs FEMA, to “alleviate uncertainty for families displaced by Hurricane Helene” by keeping the TSA program going past its March 31, 2025, end date.

The request was made on January 16 and asked that the TSA program be extended for another six months. This would mean that the program would run until September 30, 2025, instead of its original end date of December 31, 2024.

In a message in response to Governor Stein’s question, FEMA said that the program is currently being used by 2,763 people and families.

FEMA also said that because of the governor’s request and the “severity of the event,” which included winter weather that caused road closures, they agreed to give people and families an extra 60 days to find other places to live. This means that the new date for the last night of stay is May 25, 2025, and the date for hotel check-out for TSA in North Carolina is May 26, 2025.

The TSA program will continue for disaster survivors unless they are no longer qualified after an eligibility review. However, the press release made it clear that the program extension does not mean that everyone who is currently a member of TSA will automatically remain eligible until May 26, 2025.

The news statement said that the following things can make a person ineligible for the program:

  • An inspection showed that their home is now safe and ready to live in.
  • The accident victim turned down a FEMA inspection.
  • Multiple attempts have been made by FEMA to get in touch with the survivor to get more information about their living needs.
  • The news release says that FEMA checks the status of disaster survivors on a “rolling basis” to see if they can stay in the program or if there are other FEMA disaster survivor programs that might better meet their needs.

The news report also said that FEMA had to give people 21 days’ notice before TSA asked them to leave their hotel.

The news release said that people who have been through a disaster should stay in touch with FEMA during this process by calling 1-800-621-3362, going to a Disaster Recovery Center in their area, or checking disasterassistance.gov. The release also said that TSA survivors will need to keep in “regular communication” with FEMA to make sure they can continue to get help from the program.

The news release said that Governor Stein “cut red tape to speed up temporary housing solutions” in his first executive order.

People in North Carolina who were affected by the storm can now apply for a travel trailer, which will let them live on their land while they rebuild.

To be qualified for the state’s temporary trailer program, homeowners who have been affected by the disaster must first register with FEMA and be found to be eligible for temporary housing. After that, people who own homes should call the North Carolina Disaster Case Management Program at 844-746-2326.

The news statement said that North Carolina Disaster Case Management (NC-DCM) can help anyone in the state who needs safe housing or resources after a disaster because of Tropical Storm Helene.
