Chicago Officer Shot and Killed During Sister’s Birthday Celebration in Turks and Caicos Restaurant

A Chicago prison guard was killed by a stray bullet while on vacation in Turks and Caicos over the weekend.

Shamone A. Duncan, 50, was enjoying her sister’s birthday at the Aziza Restaurant & Lounge in Providenciales on Saturday night around 10 p.m. when shots were fired, hitting her. Her family said in a statement that she was killed.

At the time of the killing, Duncan and her family were on the rooftop of the popular place, not far from where they were staying at the Grace Bay Suites.

Several news sites got confirmation from the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force that Duncan and 30-year-old Turks and Caicos resident Dario Stubbs were both shot and killed. They said that a third person, a 29-year-old man, was hurt in the shooting.

According to a statement from Acting Police Commissioner Rodney Adams, there is no proof that Ms. Duncan, Mr. Stubbs, or the hurt person were the intended targets of this event. We strongly condemn this violence and will not give up on finding the person or people who did this horrible thing.

Duncan was a 21-year veteran of the Cook County Department of Corrections in Chicago. His family was sad during what was meant to be a weekend of celebration.

“They yelled at people and told them to get down,” her son Shamon Payton told ABC7. “Everyone got down,” and then my mom got up. After that, she was hit… People from the outside came and tried to help.

Duncan was “a loving mother and grandmother,” her family said in a statement. They also said that “her family and community are in deep mourning” over her death.

“I lost a lot of people, but my mother, the person who gave birth to me, feels different,” Paytom said. “You only get one mother and one father.” I misplaced it.

Duncan’s family said in a statement that she loved her family very much and that her absence will be felt by all who knew and loved her. They also said that she was committed to her job.

“Her 21 years as Cook County Sheriff showed how dedicated she was to justice and how much she wanted to keep people safe.” She inspired many people in her neighborhood and beyond with her strength, kindness, and leadership.

“Our hearts are broken for the family of Deputy Shamone Duncan who was killed on Jan. 18 while on vacation,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. She had worked for the Cook County Department of Corrections for 20 years and was now working for Cermak Health Services. We are in touch with her family to offer any help they may need during this tough time, and we are also helping her coworkers deal with the terrible news.

Even though Turks and Caicos is a famous tourist spot, there were 48 murders in the island’s 49,000 people by the end of 2024.
