A California lady was detained Wednesday after 27 dead horses were discovered on her several farms, according to officials.
Jan Johnson of Clements was arrested in San Joaquin County on accusations of animal cruelty, intimidating a public officer, making criminal threats, and possessing a short-barrel shotgun.
Sheriff’s deputies and Animal Services officers conducted a search warrant on residences in Clements, roughly 40 miles southeast of Sacramento, as part of an ongoing animal cruelty investigation.
“Several malnourished horses were discovered on the premises with limited access to any food or water, as well as approximately 27 deceased horses,” the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.
Animal Services officials and veterinarians quickly began triaging and assessing the horses. The sheriff’s office reported that four horses and one bull had to be euthanized due to negligence.
Sixteen horses were rescued and placed in the care of Oakdale Equine Rescue, where they would get medical attention, feeding, and rehabilitation.
The sheriff’s office stated that because to the size of the estates, they are still assessing other animals discovered during the search.
