BURLINGTON, Vt. — Police officers from across Vermont carried a deceased U.S. Border Patrol agent to a funeral home on Thursday, three days after he was killed during a traffic stop near the Canadian border.
Hundreds of vehicles with lights flashing followed the hearse carrying David Maland from the University of Vermont morgue to a funeral home in Burlington, WCAX-TV reported.
Maland, 44, died Monday afternoon during a traffic stop on Interstate 91 in Coventry, about 20 miles (32 km) south of the border with Canada. The FBI hasn’t shared much information about the killing, only that a German citizen with a valid visa was killed and an injured suspect has been arrested and taken to the hospital.
Maland, a member of the U.S. Air Force, worked for U.S. Customs and Border Protection for over nine years, as stated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. His family told The Associated Press that he served in the military for nine years and worked in the federal government for 15 years. He was also part of the security team at the Pentagon during the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Maland was a K-9 handler in Texas, close to the Mexico border, before moving to the northern border. His aunt, Joan Maland, said he was about to ask his lover to marry him.
