Lauren Boebert, a well-known supporter of the MAGA movement, entered a women’s bathroom in the Capitol on Thursday to ask security to remove a man.
The Trump supporter apologized after it was revealed that there was a mix-up in who they were talking about.
Boebert was overheard on the House floor telling members that she had found Delaware Democrat Sarah McBride in the women’s bathroom, according to the Daily Beast.
McBride, the first transgender member of Congress, can’t use women’s bathrooms because Speaker Mike Johnson reinstated a rule that bans transgender people from using bathrooms designated for a specific sex.
Boebert told other members that when she thought she saw McBride going into the bathroom, she said, “You shouldn’t be here,” an anonymous Republican lawmaker told the outlet.
However, the Colorado congresswoman soon learned the person in the bathroom was not McBride. “I heard Boebert say she went to say sorry,” the lawmaker said.
Bloomberg Congress writer Billy House saw the event and said that Boebert came out of the women’s bathroom, upset, and told security near the Speakers Lobby about “a guy” inside the bathroom.
House said he was “interested” and noticed four other people leave the bathroom after Boebert. He mentioned in a run of posts on X (formerly Twitter) that it applies to “all women.”
“Minutes later, Boebert rushed from the House floor to the restroom, followed by Rep. Nancy Mace.”
“Unfortunately, just a few seconds after they went into the bathroom, they came back out and quietly returned to the floor,” House said.
Boebert said she “made a mistake about someone’s identity” in a statement to the Daily Beast. Boebert said, “I said I’m sorry, learned from it, and it won’t happen again.”

McBride stated that Boebert did not confront her and that she will continue to follow the bathroom rules set by the speaker.
South Carolina Representative Nancy Mace has been critical of allowing transgender people to use bathrooms that fit their gender identity. She has urged House Republicans to prevent this access in the Capitol.
