Suspicion Grows as NYC Schools Chancellor Remains Silent on Migrant Panel’s Role

Sources said that Schools Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos did not attend an educational panel this week that decided to welcome and serve migrant children, which has led to speculation that Mayor Adams may have pressured her not to go.

Aviles-Ramos was not present for the meeting of the Panel for Educational Policy on Wednesday, which was unexpected.

For that meeting, the panel unanimously passed a resolution that reaffirmed its commitment to embrace and defend all kids and families “regardless of immigration status.”

According to officials, Aviles-Ramos had a “scheduling conflict.”

According to one source, City Hall told the chancellor not to go to the meeting or make a remark about the resolution, allegedly in order to avoid upsetting the Trump administration.

After Adams said that the city will “coordinate” with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the wake of a series of executive orders from Trump, the PEP meeting took place.

According to Adams, the city is still “analyzing” the order to overturn a long-standing ban on immigration raids in “sensitive” areas, which include schools and churches.

The PEP, which consists of appointed and elected parents, encouraged the city Department of Education to give training for staff on immigrant rights and to restate that school safety agents, who are supervised by the NYPD, “will not participate in federal immigration enforcement activities.”

When the chancellor was not there, PEP chairman Greg Faulkner told The Post, “I think they were concerned about how it would be viewed.”

However, Faulkner, who was appointed by the mayor, stated that he was not aware of any pressure from City Hall on the chancellor to keep her position a secret.

The non-binding resolution was passed unanimously with 18 votes, 11 of which were cast by representatives of the mayor.

Naveed Hasan, the elected member from Manhattan who co-sponsored the resolution with Faulkner, stated, “I have no reason not to trust her.” I have a reason to not trust the mayor.

He stated that the mayor has a “personal conflict of interest.”

He added that Adams’ desire for President Trump to pardon him for bribery and fraud charges “would cross any human being’s mind when they’re trying to save themselves.”

“It is not morally acceptable for him to continue as mayor.”

Aviles-Ramos was quoted by the Department of Education as saying, “New York City Public Schools is committed to serving every student, regardless of immigration status, national origin, or religion.”

We appreciate our partners in the Panel for Education Policy, who are in complete agreement with us on this pledge.
