On Monday evening, a shooting at a supermarket in northern Indiana left two people dead and hurt two police officers, according to the police.
Officials said the shooter was killed in an encounter with the cops.
The event started at about 5:30 p.m. when a shooter began firing at Martin’s Super Market, according to the Elkhart Police Department.
Someone called 911 to report the attack, and police and first rescuers got there soon after. Inside the store, they found two people who had been shot and declared dead at the scene, according to the statement.
Officers confronted the person who was shooting outside the store.
“During that incident, two officers from the Elkhart Police Department were shot, and the person suspected of the shooting was killed.”
Both cops were taken to nearby hospitals. One person was treated and sent home, while the other stayed in the hospital and was in fair but stable condition on Monday night, officials said.
“Police said there is no longer any danger to the public.”
The shooting is another instance of gunfire interrupting daily activities in the US.
This year, there have been at least 20 mass shootings in the US, according to the Gun Violence Archive. They, like CNN, describe a mass shooting as an event where four or more people are shot, excluding the shooter. Last year, there were over 500 mass killings in the country.
Elkhart Mayor Rod Roberson asked the community to pray for everyone involved, including the two injured police officers, the brave first responders, and those at the scene.
Authorities haven’t shared the names of the victims, the suspect, or the cops involved because they are notifying family members first.
The reason for the killing is not known.
The Elkhart County Homicide Unit is in charge of the case, with help from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office and the Indiana State Police.
