On Monday evening, the United States Coast Guard successfully stopped a boat that was carrying 21 undocumented immigrants who were trying to get to San Diego.
The boat, which is a 40-foot panga-style watercraft, was seen heading north around 40 miles from the maritime boundary line of the United States.
At around 10:45 p.m., the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) informed the Coast Guard of the vessel’s location, which led to a quick reaction from the Coast Guard’s Joint Harbor Operations Center.
Two Coast Guard cutter teams were sent out to stop the boat with help from CBP. When they arrived at the ship, they found that it was transporting 21 passengers in all.
“Initial interviews revealed that all individuals claimed Mexican nationality, although subsequent checks identified two passengers as Guatemalan and Salvadoran nationals,” the Coast Guard stated.
The people on board were taken into custody right away and were safely transferred to Customs and Border Protection personnel for processing.
The news announcement did not specify the nationality of the immigrants on the boat, but it did state that they were from three separate countries.
The Coast Guard’s involvement in this operation is part of a larger effort to combat illegal immigration and maintain border security.
After the interception, the Coast Guard continued to assist in the transportation of these individuals to specified areas in Texas and California.
The Department of Defense would then take control, facilitating their international travel as required by law.
The episode brings attention to the continuing difficulties that authorities in the United States encounter when dealing with illegal immigration, particularly along the southern border.
“In accordance with the President’s Executive Orders, the Coast Guard continues to surge assets and leverage its unique capabilities to protect America’s borders, territorial integrity, and sovereignty,” the Coast Guard acting commandant, Adm. Kevin Lunday, stated in a Jan. 25 statement.
The Department of Homeland Security has just revealed that there has been a huge increase in the number of illegal immigrants who have been arrested. In just the previous week, over 7,300 arrests have been made.
