The FDA has updated a recall for Lay’s potato chips in Oregon and Washington, marking the product as high-risk. The FDA started the recall on December 13, 2024, and on January 27, 2025, they judged the risk level to be “Class I.” The recall is due to the possibility of milk, which can cause allergic reactions, being present in the affected goods without being listed.
Frito-Lay announced a voluntary recall in December. According to the agency’s website, the FDA gives Class I designation to recall situations in which there is “reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.” If you are allergic to milk or have trouble with it, you should not eat the chips in question.
Per the FDA’s action report, 6,344 bags of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips were recalled. The products in question have a Guaranteed Fresh date of February 11, 2025, and their production codes are either 6462307xx or 6463307xx. In a press statement on December 16, 2024, Frito-Lay stated that there have been no reports of allergic reactions linked to the recall.
This isn’t the first time allergens that weren’t listed have led to a recall in the past few months. Also in January, Quaker recalled boxes of its pancake and waffle mix due to possible milk allergens, and Paras Golden Raisins were recalled over undeclared sulfites, a chemical compound that can cause allergic reactions.

Milk is one of the nine main food allergens listed by the FDA. Companies must clearly mark it on their goods, following the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA). Symptoms of food allergies can include hives, cramps, facial swelling, trouble breathing, and even loss of consciousness.
Only the 13-ounce bags of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips have been recalled; other Lay’s goods are fine. Customers who think they might be affected should look for the date and manufacturing code on their goods. If they find bags that are contaminated, they should throw them away right away. They can also call Frito-Lay Consumer Relations at 800-352-4477 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. CST, Monday through Friday.
