On Tuesday, a Peoria Public Works building on Dries Lane was briefly locked down because an armed man, who was fleeing from the police, attempted to get inside.
Peoria police reported that 18-year-old Demetrius A. Jones ran away from officers on foot and in a car on Tuesday while they were looking into a report about a guy with a gun.
During the chase, Jones left a car in the 1800 block of War Memorial Drive and ran on foot towards the city garage on Dries Lane. He tried to get into the building, but the doors were locked. Jones ran away from the police on foot and was finally caught on Interstate 74, according to the police.
Peoria Public Works spokesperson Nicholas McMillion told the Journal Star that the building was locked down for a short time on Tuesday because Jones was trying to get inside.
The event started on Tuesday at about 1:43 p.m. on North University Street, in the 3300 block, according to the police. Police were looking into a report of a guy with a gun and saw Jones, the person they were investigating, get into a car.
When the police got near the car, it backed up and quickly drove away, according to the police.
Police saw Jones get out of the car in the 1800 block of War Memorial Drive and then run away on foot. He went to the city garage but couldn’t get in, which led to a short lockdown.

During their search for Jones’ flight path, cops found a discarded gun that was identified as stolen.
Jones was caught and faces charges for running from the police, illegally having a weapon as a felon, possessing a stolen gun, resisting an officer, putting a child in danger, and traffic violations.
