Oklahoma Bill Proposes Abolishing State Mental Health Department

OKLAHOMA — A lawmaker in Oklahoma has proposed a plan to eliminate the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services in the state.

The bill would eliminate the Department of Mental Health and Substance Use functions and transfer all its functions to the Department of Corrections. If this bill passes in the Oklahoma House, all funds, property, and authority related to mental health or substance use will go to the Department of Corrections.

The bill says that the Department of Corrections will take over on July 1, 2025.
