Woman Arrested in Connection with Death of Kansas City Reporter Covering Super Bowl in New Orleans

A woman from Louisiana, who is accused of drugging people in the past, has been caught in relation to the death of a reporter from Kansas City. The reporter was in New Orleans to cover the Super Bowl.

Danette Colbert was arrested on Friday after police found out she had been using reporter Adan Manzano’s credit cards to shop at various places in New Orleans, according to the Kenner Police Department.

Security video from the police apparently shows Colbert and Manzano walking together on Wednesday morning at about 4:30 a.m., and later, Manzano was seen leaving Colbert’s room at a Comfort Suites in Kenner. Colbert is facing charges for property crimes, but the investigation is still happening. Kenner Police Chief Keith Conley mentioned that her charges might be increased.

Manzano, 27, was working as a reporter for Telemundo and Tico Sports during the Chiefs/Eagles game when he was found dead in his hotel room on Wednesday night, as reported by Steve Downing, the General Manager of KGKC Telemundo Kansas City. The reason for his death is not known. The coroner’s report is not finished yet.

At a news conference on Friday, Conley stated that Colbert is familiar to the New Orleans police because she has been arrested multiple times for financial crimes and scams. He said that in her two earlier arrests, she was accused of drugging her victims and stealing from them.

When cops searched Colbert’s house in Slidell, Louisiana, they discovered Manzano’s cellphone and credit card.

She was arrested in New Orleans and is being handled there before being taken to Kenner for more questions.

Telemundo KC and Tico Sports are working with the police during the investigation into his death.

On Thursday, they announced: “Adan was a great worker and a promising talent, and his hard work showed in everything he did.”

“Adan’s love for sports and what he did for the community will be greatly missed.” “We send our thoughts and deepest sympathy to his family and loved ones during this hard time.”

The young star passed away just a year after his wife, Ashleigh Boyd, 24, who was a teacher in Topeka, died in a car accident in southwest Shawnee County, as reported by The Topeka Capital-Journal.

They are left by their young daughter, Eleanor.

“Ashleigh was the kindest, most caring, and beautiful person.” Her bright personality was infectious and could brighten any place she entered. She was a ray of happiness and always had a smile on her face. The tribute said, “Ashleigh touched many lives and positively affected everyone she met!”

Before starting at Telemundo 39 as a sports anchor in 2021, Manzano worked at La Semana del Sur, Reyes Media Group, and Sky Sports México. Born in Mexico City, he came to Topeka, Kansas in 2018, to study for his degree at Kansas State University.

Tico Sports shared a touching message: “Adan was a skilled and professional broadcaster. He covered the sidelines for the Kansas City Chiefs’ Spanish broadcasts and called the play-by-play for the KC Current.”

“He was a friendly and energetic team member who was liked and respected by others.” Adan was a caring father to his young daughter, a supportive coworker, and a loyal friend. Our TICO Family will really miss him, and he will stay in our hearts and thoughts.

New Orleans has held 10 Super Bowls in the past, but the city feels tense this time.

A little over a month before the event started, the city experienced a violent terrorist attack. A 42-year-old man named Shamsud-Din Jabbar drove his truck, which had an ISIS flag on it, into a crowd on New Year’s Day. The attack resulted in at least 15 deaths and 35 injuries.

The attack has raised fears among residents since about 100,000 tourists are expected this week.
