Teachers’ Union Faces Backlash for Allegedly Assisting Migrants Avoid ICE After Warning to Dem Leaders

A representative of the New York City teachers’ union is seen in a recently leaked video giving guidance to immigrant families on how to evade Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers.

During a Zoom session, a United Federation of Teachers (UFT) official can be heard advising teachers on how to assist undocumented immigrants in avoiding ICE both in public and at home.

In the video, the official is heard saying, “If ICE comes to the home, you do not have to open the door.”

“In fact, you should not open the door,” the agent went on. “If you open the door but leave the chain on, that could be interpreted as allowing ICE in, so you should keep the door closed and remain silent.”

The UFT delegate brought up “red cards,” which are free to print and are intended to be placed under the door when an ICE agent visits a home and are intended for people who do not understand English.

“I’d rather not talk to you. The “red cards” said, “I do not agree to allow you into my house,” with the residents’ language on one side and English on the other.

According to the UFT spokesman, some New York City schools are issuing “red cards,” while others are not “comfortable” with the practice.

“Sharing information so educators, students, and their families know their rights is what education is all about,” a UFT spokesperson stated. “We share guidance from the city and state to help our educators navigate an ever more complicated world.”

Employees may permit federal immigration agents to enter city property if they “feel reasonably threatened,” according to a new memo sent by New York City Mayor Eric Adams to all city agencies, including schools, hospitals, and migrant shelters.

The site went on to say that the memo also cautioned that it is illegal to actively harbor or hide an unlawful immigrant.

“The memo was sent out before the new administration took office,” Adams stated during a press briefing on Wednesday.

His words, “This guidance is nothing new,” went on. “We will consistently provide our staff with the appropriate guidance. We will not ever put children in danger.”

Last month, border czar Tom Homan issued a warning to states and blue cities opposing the large deportations carried out by the Trump administration.

“We’re just trying to help public safety in your community,” Homan stated in January. “Sanctuary cities are going to get exactly what they don’t want — more agents in the communities, more people arrested, more collaterals arrested. So that’s a game they want to play? Game on.”

Homan said he would be prepared to imprison Denver Mayor Mike Johnston for his deportation demonstrations during his squabbles with Democratic leaders across the nation.

Adams stated following their December meeting that they “share the same desire” to target criminals who are illegal immigrants.
