LOS ANGELES – The southbound 405 Freeway through the Sherman Oaks area was closed Tuesday morning because of a fatal accident involving a driver going the wrong way.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash was reported just after 4 a.m. when a driver was seen going north in the southbound lanes.
A few minutes later, there was a report of a three- to four-car accident near Valley Vista Boulevard.
The CHP confirmed that one person died in the crash and that at least one other person was taken to a nearby hospital, but their status is unknown.
Just before 4:30 a.m., a SigAlert was sent out saying that all southbound roads would be closed. In the San Fernando Valley, this caused major traffic jams that lasted for hours in the morning. The effects could be seen on the northbound 101 Freeway, Ventura Boulevard, Victory Boulevard, and other major roads. In some cases, they made commute times more than an hour longer than usual.
Just before 10 a.m., all lanes of the 405 were opened again.
“FORTUNE! The road is now clear thanks to CHP officers. “The alert has been canceled in Sherman Oaks,” the CHP wrote on X at 9:41 a.m. on Monday.
The name of the driver who went the wrong way wasn’t given right away, and it wasn’t clear if they were drunk.
