Woman Banned from All US Walmart Stores Over Alleged Self-Checkout Scam, Police Say

This week, police arrested a woman from Memphis who was banned from all U.S. Walmart stores after they said she used a self-checkout scam to steal packs of ramen noodles and other things from one of the stores.

UK TODAY was able to get an affidavit from a Memphis police officer that said the 37-year-old lady was charged with criminal trespass and theft of goods worth less than $1,000. The woman was arrested at a South Memphis Walmart on February 10 at 3:44 p.m. as a “known shoplifter,” according to the court record.

“Not to be at any Walmart location in the United States due to prior shoplifting encounters,” the affidavit says of the woman who is on the Authorization of Agency (AoA) list. Authorization of arrest (AoA) lists for trespass are legal documents that property owners use to officially give police permission to arrest people who are found trespassing on their land.

“We care about our customers and employees and want them to enjoy shopping with us.” Walmart said in a statement that people are no longer welcome in their shops “rarely, but sometimes.” WREG got a copy of the statement.

When USA TODAY called the company on Thursday, a representative said they were working on a comment.

What did the woman who was being charged do at Walmart?

A woman in Walmart told the police officer that she saw two women “stealing from the store,” which is what the statement says.

The police officer wrote in the affidavit that the woman who was not allowed to enter the store was caught on camera using an old watch barcode battery to scan all of her things for $1 at the self-checkout machine. The statement says that the woman stole 11 packs of ramen noodles, a pair of women’s boots, blue jeans, and a T-shirt worth a total of $137.34 during the fraud.

In total, the other lady involved in the scam is said to have stolen a backpack, two bras, a lash kit, and an auto accessory worth $57.86, as shown in the affidavit. The court record went on to say that she was given a misdemeanor ticket for theft.

Court papers: This is not her first time stealing from a store

State court records show that the woman who was banned was found guilty of shoplifting at a Memphis Circle K on April 22, 2024. Police were told by the store clerk that the woman stole four sandwiches, two slushies, a bag of chips, and a can of cheese dip, all worth $33. This was written in an affidavit made on May 9, 2024.

The store clerk picked out the woman from a group of six photos, and she was then charged with theft of goods worth less than $1,000, according to the statement.

In February 2023, the woman was found guilty of stealing $502 worth of goods from a Nordstrom Rack. In November 2021, she stole $381.25 worth of goods from a Dicks Sporting Goods. In December 2019, she stole $281.12 worth of goods from a Walmart. And in November 2019, she stole $32.64 worth of goods from a CVS.
