Pulaski County Courthouse, Mound City

Prior to a recent renovation, the county jail was housed in the basement of the courthouse, which was first constructed in 1911.
Students from the Lovejoy School across from the courtroom reported seeing the apparition of a hanged man hanging from a tree on the courthouse yard in one of the first paranormal sightings!
But no one has been executed in Pulaski County in a very long time. The property is said to be haunted by four ghosts, including this one.
The man who was hanged is thought to be the county’s final hanged man. He haunts the basement where he was probably detained before his execution, in addition to being spotted in the tree.
The other ghosts include an elderly black woman, a female spirit known as “the taffeta woman,” who reportedly died in an accident, and a former lawyer who is accompanied by the smell of cigar smoke.
BPL Plasma, Carbondale
Formerly the magnificent cement post office in Carbondale, the building that is currently home to BPL Plasma was originally employed by the post office.
There have been some pretty unusual occurrences that have been taking place within the facility, as stated by the staff members.
There is a big chandelier in the foyer that has a tendency to swing on its own, and it is fairly normal for the doors to open and close on their own. All of these things happen rather frequently.
Some employees, including a night janitor, have even asserted that they were trapped in a closet while they were the only people in the building at the time!
There have been numerous accounts of a female spirit donning a long dress floating around in the foyer of the building, however it is not entirely obvious who exactly is haunting the property for unknown reasons.
It has even been documented that the woman was seen standing behind staff in a shot that was taken in this particular section of the building!

Crenshaw House, Equality
Originally called Hickory Hill, Crenshaw House in Equality is also referred to as “the Old Slave House” throughout the community.
In the reverse underground railroad, it was used to seize free African Americans and sell them into slavery.
A portion of these slaves were held in Illinois to work John Hart Crenshaw’s salt farms. Crenshaw would chain slaves into makeshift cells and beat them in the house’s attic, which served as a torture chamber.
Unbeknownst to the villagers, the unusual groans they were hearing were actually coming from the very much alive slaves, despite the fact that attic ghost rumors date back to the 1800s.
But in the 1920s, when the house was reopened as a tourist destination, guests began to hear odd sounds throughout the house, particularly in the attic. Bloodstains are also reported to emerge on the walls and then vanish.

Elmwood Cemetery, Centralia
Although Elmwood Cemetery has been in use since the 1860s, it was not formally created until 1877 and was known as Centralia Cemetery until 1921.

Locals refer to a statue deep within Elmwood Cemetery as “Violin Annie” as the source of the music that witnesses claim to have heard there after dark.
The statue is situated atop a huge monument that has the appearance of a Greek temple.
The statue shows a young lady carrying a violin and having long, flowing hair. Harriet Annie, the daughter of Dr. Winfield and Eoline Marshall, is shown on the statue.

Rose Hotel, Elizabethtown
The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency currently owns the hotel and runs it as a bed and breakfast.
Constructed about 1820, the establishment is presently the oldest hotel still in operation in the entire state of Illinois.
The ghost of Sarah Rose, the hotel’s previous owner, is reportedly haunting the establishment.
Visitors report seeing a ghost that looks like Sarah wandering the second-floor corridors and hovering on the stairway. She has also been held accountable for relocating objects while it was dark.
In the hotel, some visitors have even claimed to hear a female voice that has been disembodied. Even after her death, it appears that Sarah remains eager to monitor the property!
