After a summer full of free agency drama, fans across are getting ready to head to the field on Thursday for the opening day of the 2025 Major League Baseball season to catch their first look at their club. “Play ball” is what the weather will say, though.
Hurricane Milton in 2024 caused significant damage to the Tampa Bay Rays’ stadium, making them one of the season’s major weather stories.
The roof of the field was torn off by winds exceeding 100 mph.
The Rays will host their 2025 games at Tampa’s George M. Steinbrenner Field, an outdoor venue that hosts the New York Yankees Spring Training complex, while repairs are anticipated to continue until the beginning of the 2026 season.
In order to minimize the number of games during Florida’s wet season, MLB did modify the Rays’ schedule.
Forecasts for Opening Day
The MLB made preemptive schedule changes in November to maximize the amount of games played in ideal weather.
