Congressman from New York Pushes Bills to Safeguard SNAP Beneficiaries from Theft

A congressman from New York has sponsored two new laws to prevent SNAP recipients’ money from being stolen.

When it comes to SNAP benefit theft, which typically happens through the unlawful practice of “skimming,” which is the copying of EBT card information, New York City is among the most affected cities in the nation.

Bills would add security chips to cards and compensate victims of theft

Congressman Dan Goldman has introduced a bill that would establish a fund to compensate rightful victims of EBT theft.

In order to stop future theft, the second would equip EBT cards with security chips.

“It’s pretty simple. We have this kind of technology in credit cards and debit cards. It should not be a big issue, and it is a bipartisan bill,” Goldman stated.

With the expectation that fewer people will struggle to put food on the table, the laws are scheduled to be introduced in the upcoming months.

“EBT theft is getting more and more serious”

Since 2022, SNAP benefit theft has affected more than 120,000 households in New York City, according to the mayor’s office.

Officials also note that 20% of all SNAP benefit thefts nationwide take place in New York state.

On behalf of the tens of thousands of New Yorkers who, according to officials, have been victims of SNAP benefit theft, a rally was staged in Red Hook, Brooklyn, on Friday.

“EBT theft is getting more and more serious, and there are more and more victims.” Li Wong Hu, a victim of theft, stated through a translator, “Everyone is trembling and very scared using their EBT.”

“I hope the government can help seniors like me and pass the legislation so I can get my stolen money back,” Annie Cheung, a victim of theft, stated to a translator.

The coordinator of the Red Hook Initiative, Betty Bernhart, stated, “I urge the legislature to get this chip going because residents need to eat.”

How can you prevent someone from swiping your EBT card?

• Officials advise taking precautions against EBT card skimming in the interim.
• Look for any overlays that might conceal portions of the ATM or card machine.
• Keep an eye out for concealed cameras, loose or damaged pieces, and glue marks.
• Use your palm to shield the PIN pad, change your PIN frequently, and keep it private.
