In a stunning turn of events, a resolute police dog named K9 Scout was instrumental in capturing a burglary suspect from Florida who had tried to hide in tree branches in order to avoid detection.
Gregory Yates Jr., the suspect, attempted to break into a homeowner’s shed in Dixie County before escaping into the woods to evade capture.
However, K9 Scout’s sharp senses allowed them to track down the culprit high above the earth, making Yates’ effort to blend in with the trees ineffective.
The incident started when a call of an ongoing burglary was received by the Dixie County Sheriff’s Office. Yates allegedly attempted to break into the shed, but he fled into the surrounding woods as soon as he spotted the cops coming.
K9 Scout, a highly skilled and decorated police canine, was sent by the sheriff’s office to help with the suspect’s search.
Scout headed north on the route, crossing NE 640 Street before coming to a stop under a big tree.
Using his keen sense of smell, Scout looked up at this point and quickly saw Yates, who was attempting to blend in with the branches above.
Yates, who had intended to hide under the evergreen tree’s leaves and branches, was found thanks to Scout’s perseverance and accurate tracking, according to the sheriff’s office. Yates’ brief attempt to escape ended when he was immediately caught.
Nicole Hillesland was also with Yates, and when police arrived, they discovered her hanging about the crime site.
Due to her involvement in the crime, Hillesland was also taken into custody. Both were accused of breaking and entering and possessing burglary equipment.
They were taken to Cross City’s Dixie County Jail, where they will await additional court cases.
The operation’s hero, K9 Scout, is not your typical police dog. Scout is a licensed patrol and drug detection canine that has won numerous awards for his service, including the Medal of Distinction and the Medal of Valor.
Scout was transferred to the Dixie County Sheriff’s Department last year after two years of service with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, where his remarkable abilities continue to contribute to community safety and protection.
