Authorities said a man in Maine killed his mother while they were in a car together, then shot at passing cars at random, killing another woman and wounded two more before killing himself on Wednesday.
About 4:15 p.m., James Davis III, 29, opened fire on his mother, Christine Smith, 47, who was driving a car on State Route 9 in Sabattus, while he was a passenger, according to the Maine State Police.
Smith passed away there.
According to the authorities, Davis exited the automobile and started firing at oncoming cars with an AK-47-style rifle when the car crossed a road and came to a stop.
The only person in her SUV, 53-year-old Katherine Williams, was shot.
Williams’ car continued to drive before colliding with a house. After being located, she was taken to Lewiston’s Central Maine Medical Center, where she was declared deceased.

According to police, two further drivers in different pickup trucks, David Wilson, 35, and Tyson Turner, 19, were also shot.
According to investigators, both men reported the shootings by calling 911.
According to state police, Turner and Wilson were both transported by ambulance to Central Maine Medical Center and were anticipated to live.
Following the shootings, Davis III committed himself and passed away on the spot.
According to state police, autopsies will be conducted on Davis, Smith, and Williams.
According to investigators, none of the victims knew Davis save Smith.
Superintendent Katherine Grondin told that Williams, who went by Kay, was the food manager at two schools in Litchfield and had a remarkable ability to establish good relationships with both staff and children.
“Her kindness and dedication made a lasting impact on our school community, and she will be deeply missed,” Grondin stated. “Our hearts go out to her family as they navigate this loss. It has been a difficult day for all of us as we mourn the passing of a valued and beloved member of our school family.”
