Without alerting his family, a Michigan lady who was hired to look after an elderly man allegedly ordered that he be taken off life support and that his remains be cremated.
The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office said on Facebook that Linda Polk, 52, had been arrested on April 2 on suspicion of illegally obtaining power of attorney over a 78-year-old male.
The man became unwell in October 2024 and was placed on life support.
Polk allegedly used her power of attorney to request the man’s removal from life support and then had his body cremated right away.
Polk never informed his family that he had passed away, authorities claim.
The police statement claims that shortly after the victim’s death on October 19, 2024, Polk “authored a fraudulent Quit-Claim deed on the victim’s home.”
According to the sheriff’s office, Polk “allegedly embezzled a large sum of money from the victim and opened, and used, credit cards in the victim’s name.”
Her alleged illegal actions had been ongoing for months prior to the man’s death.
According to the sheriff’s office, Polk’s alleged fraud is still being investigated by Clinton Township police.
Polk was first employed in the spring of 2021, according to the authorities, to look after the wife of the alleged victim.
The husband’s health deteriorated by early 2024, and he was admitted to the hospital in October of that year before passing away.
First-degree premeditated killing, two counts of forgery, embezzlement from a vulnerable adult, three counts of identity theft, and two counts of financial transactions for unlawful use are among Polk’s current eight felony accusations.
She was arrested on April 2 and, according to the sheriff’s office, a court set her bond at $1 million and mandated that she surrender her passport and wear a steel cuff tether when she is released.
