Popular Kansas City Mexican Restaurant Closes Doors After 10 Years

The Jose Pepper’s at Legends Outlets is no longer open.

It closed on Thursday, January 9, 2018, after 18 years at 1851 Village West Parkway in Kansas City, Kansas. It first opened in 2014.

A spokeswoman for the local chain, Jody Sight, said, “We are so thankful for the warm welcome and unwavering support we’ve received from our loyal customers over the years.”

“We’re also happy to say that all of our hardworking employees will be moving on to new jobs at our new Cactus Grill in Lenexa or at any other Jose Peppers branch they choose,” Sight said.

Ownership is split between Cactus Grill and Jose Pepper’s. Ed Gieselman opened the first Jose Pepper’s in 1988 at 103rd and Metcalf Avenue. It quickly grew to include more locations in the area, offering Tex-Mex food like spinach enchiladas, tequila shrimp tacos, and nacho fritos chimichangas. When Gieselman opened the first Cactus Grill in Leawood in 1993, I was there.

The Jose Pepper’s restaurant in Mission shut down in November. Five Cactus Grills and nine Jose Pepper restaurants are still open in Missouri and Kansas. All of them are in Johnson County.
