A Florida mother was taken aback on Friday afternoon when she discovered an unattended young girl resting on a chair in her carport and a dog walking in her front yard.
The child’s mother, Aquania Aleshia Estes, 27, and her boyfriend, Pitrez Floyd, 29, are currently incarcerated.
Around 4:30 p.m. on Friday, the neighbor found the dog and toddler outside her Deltona home and phoned the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, according to a press release.
The kid told the neighbor she was “hot, thirsty, and hungry,” according to deputies.
While deputies searched for the girl’s parents, she brought her food, water, toys, and clean clothes. Police shared body camera video of the deputies’ encounter with the girl.
A deputy questioned, “You don’t know if you live nearby?”
“I’m not sure,” the girl answered.
“You don’t? “You don’t know the names of your parents?” the deputy asked.
She named police officers “Quana.”
The deputy said, “Why did mommy and daddy drop you off by yourself?”
“They had to go somewhere,” the girl remarked.
She had no idea when they would return.
According to an arrest complaint acquired by local news outlet, the toddler informed deputies, “Mommy and daddy needed to go charge their cell phones.”
She added that she didn’t go to school.
According to deputies, medical officials arrived at the site to take the girl’s vital signs and returned them in good condition.
According to the news statement, Estes and Floyd were located by police approximately nine hours later. Deputies’ disbelief at the event was evident from body camera footage.
A deputy questioned, “You leave your kid on the side of the f—in’ road?”
As shown in the video, Estes clarified that they were homeless and “live in the forest.”
The mother explained, ““She got out from where she was staying at. I was trying to go get water and food. We have been going through a rough time.”.
The family’s dwelling quarters, which included two tents in the woods, were found by deputies.
Estes and Floyd were taken into custody on suspicion of abandoning an animal and leaving a child behind.
As of Sunday morning, both were still in custody on a $51,000 bond. Her grandparents were given custody of the girl.
