UCLA Chancellor Reveals 12 Students Have Had Their Visas Revoked by Federal Authorities

Julio Frenk, the chancellor of the University of California, Los Angeles, said on Sunday that the federal government had cancelled the visas of twelve international students.

During a routine examination of the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) records, UCLA authorities discovered the revocations, Dr. Frenk said in a message to the Bruin community.

Six current students and six previous students taking part in a practical training program had their SEVIS status revoked by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), according to the data reviewed.

“The termination notices indicate that all terminations were due to violations of the terms of the individuals’ visa programs,” Dr. Frenk stated. “At this time, UCLA is not aware of any federal law enforcement activity on campus related to these terminations.”

He pointed out that these visa cancellations come after comparable measures taken recently at colleges around the country. The Bruin community has “a great deal of questions” about these events, Frenk also admitted.

“We recognize that these actions can bring feelings of tremendous uncertainty and anxiety to our community. We want our immigrant and international UCLA students, staff and faculty to know we support your ability to work, learn, teach and thrive here,” he stated.

Dr. Frenk underlined UCLA’s dedication to upholding the law while assisting its students.

According to the U.S. Department of Immigration, the SEVP is part of the National Security Investigations Division and acts as a point of contact for federal entities looking for information regarding nonimmigrants in the United States on student visas.
