BALTIMORE—The Biden-Harris Administration awarded Maryland a $18.6 million grant on Friday to build more charging and filling stations for electric vehicles (EVs).
The grant is part of President Biden’s plan to build 500,000 public EV chargers by 2030. This goal may be on track to be met faster than planned.
According to U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, the Biden administration made huge investments to help the switch to electric vehicles and ensure they are made in the United States.
“These investments will help states and communities build out a network of EV chargers in the coming years so that one day, finding a charge on a road trip will be as easy as filling up at a gas station.”
As of Friday, there were more than 206,000 public charging ports for electric vehicles. In 2024, 38,000 more public chargers will be added.
“Because of the work of the Biden-Harris Administration, there are now over 200,000 chargers available to the public across the country and hundreds of new factories in 40 states, which has created jobs and boosted the economy.” The awards we received today are a step toward a cleaner future for transit.
Along I-81 and I-78 in Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and West Virginia, the new gas stores will be built.
Jeff Marootian, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, said, “This funding shows how well the government works together to get the most out of federal investments. It will build on the Department of Energy’s work to train the energy workforce of the 21st century and get the grid ready to power zero-emission fueling infrastructure across the country.” “The new charging and refueling locations will deliver more accessible and equitable transportation options, create good-paying new jobs, and open up opportunities for innovation in communities across America.”
