79-year-old Man in Wheelchair Killed After Being Hit by SUV While Crossing Ann Arbor Street

ANN ARBOR, MI – A 79-year-old man died after being hit by a car while crossing an Ann Arbor street in a wheelchair on Monday night, according to police.

According to authorities, the incident occurred at 11:58 p.m. Monday at N. Fourth Avenue and E. Huron Street, near the University of Michigan campus.

Police said the man was crossing the street in a wheelchair when the traffic light changed. Police said a white SUV struck him while he was still in the crossing.

The man was transferred to a local hospital and died, according to authorities.

Police said the SUV’s driver fled the area before authorities arrived.

According to authorities, the 22-year-old woman who drove the SUV eventually surrendered herself in. She was detained in the Washtenaw County Jail.

Investigators believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.
