LOS ANGELES: As smoke from the deadly Palisades Fire filled the sky over Santa Monica, a resident recorded a parking cop giving out a ticket. This made people in the area angry as they dealt with the wildfire crisis.
On social media, Suzi Mellano shared the video. She said it was shot on January 7, when the Palisades Fire was still a danger to Los Angeles County.
“The [Santa Monica Police Department] was still giving out our weekly street sweeping tickets even though everyone was afraid they would lose their homes,” Mellano told Storyful.
On the video, someone is seen putting what looks like a parking ticket on the window of a car while wildfire smoke fills the sky. People quickly shared Mellano’s video online, and many people in the area wondered why parking laws were being enforced during a crisis.
Responses on social media
A lot of people were upset about the film online. Someone on Twitter named @unfollowdan said, “LMAO, this should be satire but it isn’t,” and @ChrisandJulie said, “Wow, unbelievable.” It looks like all of the resources should be used to help with the problem, not cleaning the streets.
“Simply inhuman,” said another user.
A lot of users were shocked and didn’t believe it. Some called for better organization of resources during emergencies, while others just thought it was funny considering how bad the wildfire crisis was.
Another user, Charles Conti, posted a similar video on X that seems to show a parking cop giving out tickets in Manhattan Beach while wildfire smoke filled the air.
“Think again. “Same thing this morning in Manhattan Beach,” Conti wrote under the video, which made people even more angry online.
