Detroit police say an arrest was made in connection with a tragic hit-and-run last month that killed a lady and seriously injured her partner.
Police said on Tuesday that the arrest occurred on May 1, and the suspect was officially charged on May 3. Police claimed the arrest was made feasible by community members and local businesses providing camera footage.
The event occurred on April 19, at the intersection of Gratiot Avenue and East Grand Boulevard. According to police, two people riding electric scooters on East Grand Boulevard were struck by a vehicle heading along Gratiot. The victims were recognized by their families as Juan Smiley and D’Joran James.
Smiley was murdered on the scene, while James remains in the hospital.
“Despite what has happened, I forgive you and hold no grudges in my heart,” James stated on Tuesday. “And just as I pray for myself, family, friends, and Juan and her family and her friends, I pray for you as well.”
