DENVER — January is human trafficking awareness month, and a new safe house in the Denver area will soon open to help women who have survived trafficking.
The safe house is run by the HER Campaign. The organizers said they will open the doors on February 3. FOX31 will not reveal the specific address of the home to keep the 12 women’s privacy safe.
“Right now, there are boxes all over the place.” “All the important parts are prepared and ready,” said Sammy Higgs.
Higgs, the founder and executive director of HER Campaign, said that his goal is to help provide residential programs for survivors of human trafficking.
Higgs said that there is ongoing support for patients as they heal. “We’re the first step for emergency support.” Trauma is very important.
HER Campaign is teaming up with two other groups in Denver to address an important issue. In 2023, Colorado had the most recorded cases of human trafficking in the country, with a total of 84 cases, according to the Common Sense Institute Colorado.
“In the United States, there are about 1,600 beds,” Higgs said.”It doesn’t scratch the surface. About 27.6 million people are believed to be victims around the world.
Every aspect of the safe house is carefully planned, including the large windows and the art on the walls that takes people’s experiences into account.
Higgs said, “Every room has two really nice beds.” “We care about your privacy.” Each room has its own bathroom, and there is a private wall.
The aim is to concentrate on quick recovery and improvement. The house can accommodate up to 12 women for eight weeks as they prepare for their next steps.
“Everyone is important and has a story.” “When we take care of someone, we make sure to treat them as a person,” said Higgs. “We’re called the HER campaign because we want to focus on her.” The person in front of us has their own story and special needs.
The three groups can help up to 20 women at once across the campus. This also includes pregnant women and some people with young children.
If you or someone you know is affected by human trafficking, please call the national number at 888-373-7888. They are available 24/7.
