Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) proposed an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would allow President Trump to serve a third term in the White House so that the country “can sustain the bold leadership our nation so desperately needs.”
Ogles suggested a change on Thursday that states: “No one can be elected President more than three times, and no one can serve more than two consecutive terms. Also, if someone has served as President for over two years in someone else’s term, they can’t be elected President more than twice.”
Like all U.S. leaders, Trump cannot run for a third term because of the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.
Ogles said on Thursday that President Trump’s strong leadership is very different from the chaos, pain, and economic struggles Americans have faced in the last four years. “He has shown that he is the only person in recent times who can fix our country’s problems and make America great again, and he needs enough time to do this.”
Trump jokingly suggested he might run for a third term during a meeting with House Republican lawmakers in Washington, just before they held their leadership votes.
“I think I won’t run again unless you take action,” Trump said a week after winning the 2024 presidential election, according to The Hill. “Unless you say, ‘He’s really good, so we need to make it work.’”
After the meeting, House Republicans told reporters that the comments were not serious and that they laughed when they heard them.
“That was a joke.” “It was obviously a joke,” said Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) at the time. “I leaned over to somebody beside me, [Arizona Rep.] Andy Biggs, and I said, that’ll be the headlines tomorrow, ‘Trump trying to thwart the Constitution,’ which — there’s nothing further from the truth.”
Trump has said in interviews that he will not run for a third term if he wins the 2024 presidential race.

On Thursday, Ogles, a member of the House Freedom Caucus, praised several executive orders that Trump signed after taking office on Monday. These orders focused on issues like the southern border, energy production, and pulling out of the World Health Organization.
“Just a few days in, President Trump has already started reversing the harmful policies of the Biden Administration to make the United States strong and successful again,” Ogles said on Thursday.
