A Shelter-in-place Order Was Given as Eugene Police Handle a Situation Involving an Armed Man in Distress

A man was arrested by the Eugene Police Department and taken to a mental health treatment center on Tuesday night. He walked onto a rooftop naked at an apartment building near Shadow View Dr. and Longfellow Pl., holding a handgun and threatening to kill himself and others.

Eugene police said that regular officers, crisis negotiators, drone teams, and SWAT members were sent to the apartment building at 6:11 p.m.

People living nearby got a safety warning saying, “If you are within three blocks, please stay indoors and stay safe until we update you.”

Eugene police said the man left his apartment on his own and was taken to a nearby hospital for mental health care at 8:13 p.m. The man’s guns were taken to keep them safe.

The Department pointed out that this was the first time the main negotiator took charge during an operation. She quickly connected with the man and got him to agree to surrender in about 15 minutes.
