LOS ANGELES — A$AP Rocky is on trial for firing a gun at a former friend. On Tuesday, the jury selection process will begin. If found guilty, Rocky could face a decades-long prison term.
The 36-year-old man has pled not guilty to two counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, and his lawyer has said that he did not do anything wrong.
The hip-hop star, fashion mogul, and actress who has been nominated for a Grammy is married to Rihanna for a long time and has two young sons with her. It’s not totally clear if Rihanna will show up in court to support him, but his lawyer says it’s not likely.
Rocky has been chosen to be one of the celebrity chairs at the Met Gala in May. He also has a major part in a movie directed by Spike Lee that stars Denzel Washington and will come out soon after.
He could get up to 24 years in prison if jurors find him guilty of shooting at his ex-girlfriend in Hollywood in 2021. This would completely change his life.
Judge Mark Arnold of the Superior Court said he wants to quickly appoint a jury and is putting tight limits on how long lawyers can question potential jurors.
At an early meeting, he said, “I will let the jurors know that everyone is to be treated the same, no matter who the defendant is, whether they are the richest person in the world or the poorest person in the world.”
Wednesday might be the day for opening comments. Arnold is letting the media record the whole hearing after the jury is chosen.
After a preliminary hearing in 2023, another judge said that Rocky should go to trial for reportedly firing a gun at Terell Ephron, a childhood friend who said that their relationship had deteriorated and a fight reached a peak on the night of November 6, 2021. Ephron said in court that bullets hit him in the hands.
