After 77 Years, Iconic Los Angeles Greek Restaurant Serves Its Last Meal

A Los Angeles landmark that has been providing Greek-style dinners and pastries for more than 70 years has announced that it may shortly close.

“My father, Sam Chrys, opened the doors to our family business in October 1948, and from that very first day, it has been filled with love, hard work and our local community,” Chrys Chrys wrote on the restaurant’s Facebook page on Thursday.

For many years, Chrys has continued his father’s heritage by transforming Papa Cristo’s into a gathering place for the local Greek Orthodox church’s members as well as a restaurant.

After 77 Years, Iconic Los Angeles Greek Restaurant Serves Its Last Meal

“After 77 unforgettable years on the corner of Pico and Normandie, it’s time for me to hang up my apron and for us to say goodbye (for now),” according to the post.

The taverna-style eatery has been highlighted on numerous occasions throughout the years, notably in Los Angeles Magazine and the Los Angeles Times.

With the assistance of his daughter Annie, Chrys attracted a new clientele in 2012 when he began showcasing his playful nature through posts on Facebook and Instagram.

On May 4, Papa Cristo’s will close, but Chrys writes in the article, “The story of Papa Cristo’s doesn’t end here — exciting things are coming.”

Chrys reached out to those who had supported the restaurant over the past 70 years, but he did not disclose any information regarding his future plans.

“To all of our cherished customers and devoted staff, I say ευχαριστώ (thank you!). You are my family, and Papa Cristo’s will always be a part of yours,” according to the post.
