Montgomery, Alabama — A plan has been proposed in the Alabama House of Representatives that would stop children aged 16 and younger from making social media accounts.
HB235 would make social media sites check users’ ages.
The bill was put forward by Rep. David Faulkner and supported by three other lawmakers.
The new rules will start on January 1, 2026. The Attorney General of Alabama will enforce the law and can fine social media sites up to $50,000 for each violation.

Senator Katie Britt from Alabama has introduced a new government law to stop children aged 13 and under from using social media. The bill, called the ‘Kids Off Social Media Act,’ would stop social media companies from using algorithms to suggest material to kids aged 17 and under.
