Alabama Lawmakers Introduce New Bill Package to Combat Crime

MONTGOMERY, Alabama — House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter (R) said in an interview with CBS 42 that lawmakers are starting their work. Tomorrow, the 2025 parliamentary session will begin. Ledbetter said that a top priority is to make Alabama safer.

A new bipartisan bill will increase police presence in towns across Alabama. Ledbetter stated that hiring and retaining more cops is a key priority.

“I believe it will have a big effect on our state.” There are places where we have crime problems that we need to fix. Ledbetter said that crime makes it harder to attract businesses. “I believe it damages retail sales and property values, and some of it will help with those issues.”

Rep. Juandalynn Givan (D-Birmingham) thinks keeping people around is a problem. Givan says one bill would set up a scholarship scheme for the family members of police officers.

“Currently, Birmingham often ranks as the third or fourth deadliest city in the United States each week,” said Givan. “That’s not good.”

Rep. Givan said these bills will end that issue across the state. She has one piece of advice for now. “Make sure to lock your cars after you.” “Especially if you have a gun,” she said. “Many of the weapons used by these young killers come from our driveways.”

Rep. Allen Treadaway (R-Morris) worked in law enforcement for 31 years. He said that all lawmakers need to work together to safeguard our state. “Treadaway said it’s hard to get support from both political parties for new laws.” “We all share the same goal: keeping our communities safe.”

Another bill would make Glock’s changes illegal. In the end, Treadaway said it’s all about making neighborhoods stronger. “I believe you’ll notice a very serious attitude about that,” Treadaway warned that if local leaders refuse to take action, they might ask state officials to step in and handle things for them.

Ledbetter said they put together the plan with assistance from law enforcement leaders. That includes Hal Taylor, Secretary of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, and other local police.
