A federal jury in Kansas found a woman guilty of killing her Army soldier husband at their home at Fort Riley in February 2024.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Kansas said on Friday that Margaret E. Shafe, who was 31 years old, was found guilty of second-degree murder for shooting and killing her soldier husband, Army Spc. Greg Shafe, who worked at Fort Riley in Kansas.
His biography says that he died of a gunshot wound to the head that he got on base on February 19, 2024. He was said to be dead the next day. Before Shafe could go to Poland with his new group, his wife had to go to the hospital because of problems with her pregnancy.
“Greg stayed at Margaret’s side while she was hospitalized in Kansas City for the remainder of her pregnancy and Sydona’s stay in NICU,” the notice says. “Greg loved his family very much, and Sydona was the most important thing to him.” She really was a “dad’s girl.”
The death notice says that Shafe lived on base with Margaret, his daughter who was 1 year old, and his granddaughter.
A friend of the family, Abby Shelton, also set up a GoFundMe page to help Shafe’s children.
“This is the worst kind of tragedy.” Greg was a bright spot in a very dark world. The GoFundMe post says, “We are all heartbroken and will pray forever for Greg’s family and loved ones.”
Shelton said that one of Greg Shafe’s brothers will adopt his younger child. His stepdaughter, who is 9, will live with her biological father, shelton said.
The worst punishment that can happen to Margaret Shafe is life in jail.
At first, no one knew what caused the killing or why it happened.
Officials also said that the case was looked into by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division, and the Fort Riley Directorate of Emergency Services.
