Basset Cattle Dog Simon Sworn in as NYC’s New Honorary Dog Mayor After Wild Election

Basset Cattle Dog Simon Sworn in as NYC’s New Honorary Dog Mayor After Wild Election

On Sunday afternoon, Simon the Bassett cattle dog was sworn in as the second honorary canine mayor of New York City. This came after an election that was full of strange cryptocurrency drama.

“I am grateful, as is Simon, for the opportunity to use this platform for the next two years to promote animal fostering and adoption in New York City as well as to raise awareness and fundraising for all of the amazing organizations on the ground already doing this work,” Sophie Vershbow, Simon’s owner, stated at the pup’s inauguration.

When Simon, the Basset Cattle canine, was sworn in as New York City’s second honorary canine mayor, he arrived at City Hall in style.

To take his place in history, Simon padded with pride to the front of City Hall, wearing an office tie and a winter coat.

At the ceremony, which was attended by a large number of supporters, Jumaane Williams, the city’s public advocate, delighted the audience by bringing fun and charm to the customary swearing-in process by incorporating puns about dogs.

“Do you promise to uphold the office of New York City dog mayor with liberty and, yes, dog-mity, for all?” He finished his outfit with a top hat after saying that and shaking the puppy’s paw.

This cycle’s honorary dog mayor election was unexpected and tumultuous, with cryptocurrency fans playing an uncommon role in the contest.

A wave of cryptocurrency users started to pour into the polls amid the fierce rivalry, making Bertram the Pomeranian their front-runner.

In an effort to financially encourage votes for their candidate of choice, Bertram’s supporters even went so far as to create a brand-new cryptocurrency known as BERT coin.

There was a lot of criticism about this tactic, and many community members believed the event was becoming unduly unpleasant and commercialized.

Some of the contestants, such as Enzo the Shih Tzu, left the race as the election gained traction because of the increasingly antagonistic environment.

Simon, the Basset Cattle Dog, was able to increase his support and move up the polls as a result. Despite having a lot of support from the crypto community, Bertram the Pomeranian lost to Simon in the final rounds of the election in early November.

As a result, the stylish Basset Cattle Dog was elected the new honorary dog mayor of New York City.

Bertram was named Deputy Mayor after the election, despite his losing run for mayor. Sadly, Bertram’s tenure in power was brief because he died soon after the election results were announced.

To help with the responsibilities of the newly elected dog mayor, the city promptly appointed Pepper the miniature chocolate Dachshund as a deputy mayor. Pepper was sworn in alongside Simon.

Simon will assume the duties of Sally Long Dog, the retiring dog mayor, who has served out her two-year tenure.

“Sally leaves behind an incredible legacy of activism, and earnestness — and lethargy,” quipped Dog Mayor organizer Stephen Calabria.

This second biennial election, which has grown to be a cherished city tradition and provides a fun and distinctive take on the political process, involved 15 dogs from all five boroughs.

As the official dog mayor, Simon will continue his predecessor’s legacy while overseeing the wacky and emotional operations of the honorary canine government of New York City.
