Body of Missing Virginia Beach Boy, 12, Discovered in Pond, Investigation Ongoing

Only a few days after his parents received a distressing ransom demand, the death of 12-year-old Juan Sebastian Mejia Acevedo, a kid from Virginia Beach, was found in a nearby pond on Monday afternoon.

He had been reported missing the previous week. Since Friday night, when his parents reported that he had never come home from a friend’s house, the kid had been missing.

A series of events, including a ransom demand, an AMBER notice, and a sad conclusion, were triggered by his absence.

At first, the circumstances appeared to suggest a potential kidnapping, Virginia Beach Police Chief Paul Neudigate said.

The boy’s parents received a ransom message during their Facebook Live appeal for assistance after reporting him missing.

The message asked for $500 in order to free the youngster. In response, the state police tried to find Acevedo early the following morning by issuing an AMBER notice.

The parents apparently paid the $500 ransom because they were frantic to find their son, but they never heard back from the purported kidnappers.

According to Chief Neudigate, the ransom demand might have been a ruse to exploit the family during a period of severe emotional turmoil.

He pointed out that other families dealing with comparable stressful circumstances have been the victims of this type of fraudulent operation.

It’s evident that the circumstances surrounding the ransom demand have only made the case more complicated, even though the police have not made it apparent whether the ransom was a part of a real kidnapping or a twisted money grab.

Authorities discovered Acevedo’s body in a pond next to the Cambria at Cornerstone apartments, which are off South Independence Boulevard, on Monday afternoon, three days after the original allegation.

This neighborhood was close to the boy’s Mica Avenue residence, where his parents had last seen him. Many questions remain after the body was found, and the cause of death has not yet been established by the authorities.

“It’s too early for me to speculate,” Neudigate stated. “We just recovered him. As we get more information and we can confirm facts — and not what we believe occurred — we will get that out to the community.”

“We had no specific indication that these ponds were an area of interest, but we did not want to leave any stone unturned.”

Whether to investigate the boy’s death as a homicide or declare it an accident is still up in the air. To ascertain the cause of death, the body was sent to the medical examiner for an autopsy.

The results will be used by the authorities to inform their next course of action.
