Police in Virginia say the kid who killed 17 people at the Parkland school was caught trying to break into three schools.
Zachary Cruz, 24, was seen on security video at several Georgia County schools, such as Wilson Middle School, Wilson High School, and the Valley Career and Technical Center.
The event took place on January 25 at around 11:30 p.m. Cruz was seen walking up to exterior doors, trying to open them, and looking inside, which showed that he was trying to get in.
The Woodrow Wilson Police Department, the Virginia State Police, and the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office all looked into Cruz’s case and arrested him on February 4.
They charged him with three minor counts of trespassing. After a short stay in jail, he was let out on February 6. Later, Augusta County Sheriff Donald Smith put out a statement because parents and other people in the community were “growing concerned” about his release.
“I know that this situation has caused you, your families, and our community a lot of stress,” Smith wrote. “We put the safety and security of all students, staff, and members of the community first.” This is being taken very seriously, I want you to know that.
Smith also said that “heightened security measures” had been put in place, such as having more police on and around school grounds in the district.
“We are also keeping a close eye on any possible threats and talking to school officials to make sure all the necessary safety measures are taken,” he said.
“Thank you for being alert and speaking out about your worries. It’s easy to hear your words. Our office is here for you if you need anything else or have more questions or information to share.
The Augusta General District Court says Cruz’s next court date is May 1, 2025.
Nikolas Cruz killed 17 people at Parkland High School in 2018. It was the deadliest school killing in U.S. history.
Seventeen people were killed and seventeen were hurt when Cruz opened fire on students and workers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on February 14, 2018. He ran away from the scene of the crime by pretending to be a student. He was later caught and arrested.
Cruz admitted to all of his sins and said sorry for them in October 2021. In the end, he got life in prison without the chance of release in November 2022.
