On Tuesday, a committee of the California State Assembly defeated two measures that would have prohibited transgender athletes from participating in girls’ sports.
One bill, filed by Assemblymember Bill Essayli (R-Riverside), would have prohibited transgender kids from using restrooms and locker rooms that do not correspond to their gender given at birth, as well as from playing on sports teams.
The other bill would have prohibited transgender athletes from participating in women’s and girls’ sports from elementary school through college. It was filed by Assemblymember Kate Sanchez (R-Rancho Santa Margarita).
Sanzhez responded on social media to her bill’s rejection by saying, “CA Dems just killed my bill to protect girls’ sports. They DO NOT CARE that girls no longer have a level playing field and it’s absolutely ridiculous.”
Additionally, Essayli responded on social media to the rejection of his bill by stating, “Assembly Democrats doubled-down on their war against women and parental rights.”
“The vast majority of Californians and Americans agree: keep boys out of girls sports,” Essayli added. “Assembly Democrats are radically out of touch with commonsense Californians and the voters will hold them accountable to restore justice and fairness in girls sports.”
In a story initially reported that Essayli would step down from his position in the California Assembly to take over as the Central District of California’s next U.S. Attorney, taking effect on Wednesday.
Essayli thanked President Trump for the nomination in a statement issued by his office.
“I intend to implement the President’s mission to restore trust in our justice system and pursue those who dare to cause harm to the United States and the People of our nation,” he stated.

A day after Transgender Day of Visibility, the California State Capitol was the scene of a transgender rights hearing that drew large crowds and people waiting up in the halls to testify on both sides of the measures.
“Opportunities that I and many other female athletes have worked so hard for now feel out of reach,” commented Jaden, a female high school athlete.
Robert Rivas, the speaker of the California Assembly, voted against Sanchez’s bill.
“I’m not going to support a bill that takes rights away from a protected class of people,” Rives stated. “Gender identity is a protected class here in California.”
Reporters chased Rivas up a legislative stairs after he cast his vote because he refused to pause to talk to them, and he eventually walked into his office and out of sight of the cameras.
The vote was held Tuesday after Governor Gavin Newsom, in an interview with Republican political activist Charlie Kirk for the first edition of his new podcast, stated that he was against trans athletes participating in women’s sports.
Katherine Darrow, a transgender advocate, stated, “We are fighting a battle against people who want to squash our ability to express ourselves.”
