Some grocery shops in the Valley are only selling a limited amount of toilet paper and paper towels so that people don’t have to rush to buy them during the California wildfires.
Valley grocery stores in several cities are restricting purchases of mostly everyday items like toilet paper, laundry detergent, and paper towels. There are also many leftover eggs.
Some stores are noticeably empty because of it.
It was said that shops missed shipments this week because of the wildfires.
Dr. Gene Schneller is an ASU professor in the W. P. Carey School of Business’s Department of Supply Chain Management. He says that the effects on the Valley shouldn’t be too widespread because of a lack of goods. Instead, things may be moved around depending on what states need them.
People who shop say they’ve changed how they do it because of the COVID-19 outbreak.
“I don’t want something to happen where we don’t have any food.”
“The milk, eggs, and toilet paper always go first.” Not at all necessary.”
“They are limiting it all to 2 or 3 items per person and I thought, ‘Oh gosh, here we go again.'”
“That’s a little scary.” Everyone had a really hard time during that time. I’m scared that will happen again. We have to keep going, though.
“I don’t buy a lot, but I buy enough to have at least a month’s worth, in case of an emergency.”
Someone from ASU says we should learn something from this.
Dr. Schneller was in Los Angeles when the fires started and saw for himself how terrible it was.
“Think of 10,000 homes that are suddenly empty. The people who lived there have to go shopping or grab food at different stores.” Dr. Schneller said, “I think a lot of the suppliers will have to rethink where they send the materials, food, and other things they used to have.”
Dr. Schneller says that all of us can learn from this.
“I think maybe the lesson for all of us is, to be prepared that this can happen, whether it’s this kind of a natural disaster or something else, and we need to prepare for it,” he stated.
The professor doesn’t think there will be any long-term effects.
